recently read (fell in love with)/ “Six of Crows” + “Aristotle & Dante”

The past two weeks have been really amazing as far as books??????? Not only did I read 3 five-star books, but I also WON THREE GIVEAWAYS????? I never win giveaways of any kind. Once as a child I won a Stuart Little DVD from an Italian restaurant, and that incident exhausted all of my random luck. BUT NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN??? AND BOOKS???? and physical copies, too, which is always better?????

I’ve strangely but gratefully and excitedly won…

tysm to Crystal @Paper Royalty 🙂 + Kathy @booksandmunches + goodreads

And aside from giveaways I’ve fallen fully in love.

Reasons first:

“Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Rating: 5/5 stars

Pg count: 359 pgs

Genre: YA Bildungsroman

Pub. 2012

I read this book in ONE NIGHT, I picked it up and remained in bed until I finished. WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW DEAR THIS BOOK IS TO ME. It’s one of my absolute favorites of all time (if someone forced me to pick a favorite by dangling me over a cliff or something, I’d say this one)

Aristotle and Dante are two Mexican American teenagers growing up in the 1980s, both of them lonely and beautiful and “weird in a good way.” They meet at a swimming pool and sunshine Dante offers to teach angsty Ari to swim.

“I love swimming”
“I know,” I said.
“I love swimming,” he said again. He was quiet for a little while. And then he said, “I love swimming—and you.”
I didn’t say anything.
“Swimming and you, Ari. Those are the things I love the most.”

MY HEART JUST FLEW ACROSS THE ROOM. I ADORE THEIR RELATIONSHIP, NOTHING MAY SEPARATE THEM. There is nothing as pure and beautiful as this book, entirely nothing.2018 challenge

We follow them falling in love with one another, starting as best friends (MY FAVORITE) and letting that evolve into being absolutely EVERYTHING.

They’ve found their number one person in each other. They know each other better than anyone, yet still love and protect one another unconditionally??? What more can you need as a human being????

Ari is our narrator and HE IS SO UNIQUE AND I RELATE TO THAT BOY WITH ALL MY HEART. And Dante is the most lovable quirky person to ever exist. Dante inspires me to be brave, and I held my breath every time he cried (he cries frequently so I was lightheaded). The prose is gorgeous, the plot is perfectly done, lock yourself away TODAY and (re)read this book, that is my wish.

AND Benjamin Alire Sáenz might be working on a sequel, “There Will Be Other Summers”???? When I discovered this I nearly collapsed onto the floor probably to my death. BENJAMIN I BELIEVE IN YOU. I feel terrible for those waiting since 2012.

also this would make a gorgeous film. Including Dylan O’Brien as Dante. my dreams would come true

Reasons Second:

“Six of Crows” + “Crooked Kingdom” by Leigh Bardugo

Rating: 5/5 stars

Pg. count: 456 & 536 pgs

Genre: YA Fantasy

Pub. 2015 & 2016

(I read these so fast and right after the other, so they blur together as one book.)

THE BEST duology ever written no possible arguments and I’m forever dedicated to KAZ!!!!!!! He’s my favorite character, I love how his voice is raspy like beloved Vito Corleone, his CROW CANE yielded as a terrifying weapon, his ruthlessness, his classy suits, the Dirtyhands gloves. He is one of the best characters of all time, any medium of art, HE IS A HOLY FIGURE??????

AND OF COURSE THE WORLD-BUILDING,  KETTERDAM ESPECIALLY. Sassy, flirtatious, food-loving Nina is heroic, JESPER AND WYLAN, and Inej is literally the most bad A wraith what more is there to say?????

and how Bardugo handles plot, never revealing the reasons behind what’s going on until AFTER it’s carried out, so you’re constantly trying to understand the complexity of Kaz’s mind and plan and IT’S BRILLIANT.

cruel prince

******SPOILERS ahead******

HOWEVER. The second book disappointed me slightly. I wanted more Jesper and Wylan moments (though Jesper comforting Wylan outside the insane asylum was pure golden beauty) and book two made me kind of stop shipping Inej and Kaz???

I feel like there are conditions Inej puts on Kaz’s personality (which is understandable btw), like she wants him to be a better person (this sounds terrible) but that’s NOT HIM.

she can’t love Kaz unless he kind of stops being who he is. HIS PERFECT EVIL SELF.  Kaz is not the wish image Inej has in her mind. I know she said she won’t give up on him……’s just that I don’t think Kaz can/will ever be what Inej wants him to be.

but i love them both so much individually, with or without relationships, so I’m not completely devastated

AND WAS MATTHIAS’ DEATH REALLY NECESSARY???? No. It didn’t even make sense???? Why must my own Nina suffer the rest of her life?????????????

This February is officially a quality month. And it’s not even done yet, I just started “Carry On” by Rainbow Rowell and I have a feeling it’s going to be another 5/5 stars. ❤

ya + classic books

😱😱 you almost spoiled me, but thankfully I’d already been spoiled about Crooked Kingdom. Congratulations on winning the giveaways!! I’ve also won 2 giveaways in the past week, it’s a surreal, but I also had a lucky streak in December when I won like five?? Many, really. I hope you get a lucky streak too.
Lovely reviews on both of them! ❤
