Today is my first blog tour and this is ultimate nerd excitement???? I didn’t know how much fun this would be and now I’ve signed up for 3 I have no regrets.
I read this book through the Fantastic Flying Book Club and was sent a physical copy which my cat despises.
Look at him pushing it away and being indecent.
“The Window” by Amelia Brunskill
Pg. count: 352 pgs
Genre: YA Contemporary, Mystery
Pub. April 3, 2018
When her twin dies after falling out of a bedroom window, Anna is crushed (emotionally, she wasn’t beneath the window when jess fell. i’m going straight to hell.) BUT things are not adding up, Anna is convinced Jess’ death was not an accident and she wants to get to the bottom of this because she’s a sleuth and everyone STEP BACK.
I like how creepy Anna is. She does some extremely questionable things over the course of this novel and I was so proud of her. GIRL. SOLVE. THAT. MYSTERY.
I also feel like the author has potential to create a wonderful second novel????? Imo this book is a lovely bone collection of decent characters and plot and the RIGHT premise would produce a living body on top of this skeleton talent.
The biggest problem for me was the prose did not sound personal, despite being written in first-person. It sounded like a textbook going over the narrative, the grief scenes actually made of wood and I was splintered but I didn’t care because the plot was boring and I was totally numb to it all. I basically knew whodunit the whole time but when I found out for sure it wasn’t satisfying to know I was right. When the real scene of Jess’ death is revealed (hastily, from the village moron) I just sighed because it was anti-climactic. I was dead inside.
BUT overall it wasn’t the worse book to ever be written and I have a feeling Amelia Brunskill is going to make a wonderful second novel, we just need deeper characters.
