Plot:

“How can I look at these maps, see this riddle, and do nothing? They are my brothers.”

Nineteen-year-old Elias is a royal explorer, a skilled mapmaker, and the new king of del Mar’s oldest friend. Soon he will embark on the adventure of a lifetime, an expedition past the Strait of Cain and into uncharted waters. Nothing stands in his way…until a long-ago tragedy creeps back into the light, threatening all he holds dear.

The people of St. John del Mar have never recovered from the loss of their boy princes, kidnapped eighteen years ago, both presumed dead. But when two maps surface, each bearing the same hidden riddle, troubling questions arise. What really happened to the young heirs? And why do the maps appear to be drawn by Lord Antoni, Elias’s father, who vanished on that same fateful day? With the king’s beautiful cousin by his side-whether he wants her there or not-Elias will race to solve the riddle of the princes. He will have to use his wits and guard his back. Because some truths are better left buried…and an unknown enemy stalks his every turn.

Forgive me but I was one hundred percent consumed with boredom.

maybe it’s because I’m still on a “foxhole court” + “raven boys” + “song of achilles” high and I’m untrustworthy right now because all of my emotions are invested in those books. AND I just did an “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” reread, so my head is not in a nice place to judge things fairly. nothing compares to my true sons.

BUT. There are also technical reasons. The prose itself was fanciful to the point it become impersonal. I need intimate writing, why read otherwise? So I DNF. I felt bad because this was a blog TOUR. I completely failed. but if I were to die accidentally and THIS was the last thing i read I would be upset af.

and I felt a romance approaching and I was completely against it for some reason. NO YOU MAY NOT FALL IN LOVE. They cannot understand what love is until they are achilles and patroclus.

rational people: malanie, it’s become an actual problem.

me: HUSH

rational people: but-

me: no.

Overall I didn’t feel like this book was SPECIAL, which I require in books. You know that feeling when a book is irreplaceable and there’s nothing like it in this world and you will sacrifice yourself for the precious characters? Why read something if it’s not THAT?

But I can see why some people might adore it, so maybe just try it???

no I‘m not just trying to soften the fact that I’m a mean person.

Also tell me your favorite book couple I need this information. ❀

Hee hee Song of Achilles + Raven Boys + Aristotle and Dante are hard acts to follow up on! (They are literally my favorites) But YES, I’m also the kind of person who either needs my book to be special and amazing, or I don’t give a crap about them, so I totally feel your pain with this review!

OMG, I’m just now reading the Song of Achilles and my heart is breaking. Completely. I have a gay love in my current WIP and Patroclus and Achilles are such goals. Everything about them is making em rethink my two guys and the depth fo their feelings and love. I just cannot get over how much I adore Patroclus and Achilles. Also, complete tears and heartbreak.
