May Wrap-Up ft. June TBR

WRITING + ANXIETY W/ YA GIRL

What just happened???? MAY COME BACK.

May =me being a giant blur of anxiety and I have no idea why but I’ve become the queen of random listlessness & then opening my laptop to write even one smol paragraph takes magical powers. dkjfldds. SMDLFKSLKFDS.
And being an English major = MANY ESSAYS AND HYPERVENTILATING.

Even if you love writing there’s only so many times you can do a thesis statement before you’re postal. OH GOD.

*darkly frowns at whoever invented stupid thesis statements*

why am I taking summer courses????

WHY DID I HAVE TO BE EXTRA????

me @ being successful and productive

Flower Bouquet 2

First & Then by Emma Mills / THE FRIENDSHIPPP????? I loved this story because 1) pride and prejudice retelling, senior year of high school. 2) it’s about a girl who I love named Devon and how she comes to love and fully claim her brother Foster????? PLATONIC LOVE REP YERS PLERS.

What I Leave Behind by Alison McGhee / Wanna know why I appreciated this extremely small volume. n o r o m a n c e. NEIN. It’s about a boy’s  || personal || journey to grieve his dad’s suicide. I’m SO REFRESHED. And it was only 100 pages, each with 100 words. eazy peasy lemon squeezy

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness / My BUDDY READ with Ris!!!! We both agreed the book kind of sucked. But we tried so hard to love it, and there’s going to be a movie with Tom Holland as the lead, so that means the main character is highkey Spiderman and we wanted to appreciate himm????

But now we’re reading Lighting Thief so it’s fine.Flower Bouquet 2

Relay by Layla Reyne / One of my favorite authors of ALL TIME NOra Sakavic recommend this on her Goodreads, and I really did enjoy this???? So cute?????? It’s NA about an Olympic Swim Team and a gay love story and friends-enemies-lovers.

Medley by Layle Reyne / The SEQUEL. I love when a sequel follows side characters from the first book, especially when it means another gay love story. Still Olympic Swimming + hurt/comfort + conflict that totally could have been avoided if the MCs would just f’ing communicate.

The Wicker King by K Ancrum / This book. My heart. It’s hard to talk about Jack and August, who take care of each other and would do anything for each other, because their story is so romantic and well done?? And it’s my favorite trope, best friends-lovers. And K Ancrum liked two of my tweets????? I’m personally fulfilled and prepared for death.

Flower Bouquet 2

Wolfsong by TJ Klune / MY FAVORITE BOOK IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. There is nothing in this world better than characters who are completely loyal to each other and I’m just. Speak. Cannot. I love every single character in this book, even the ones that are there for two seconds.

Into This River I Drown by TJ Klune / You know when you like a book and it’s written well and it’s TJ Klune so obviously the first two statements are true BUTTT the characters are just not there? I always need to vibe with at least one character and I didn’t really like anyone?? Too much grieving and capriciousness,,,and I didn’t care when anyone cried which reminded me that i’m evil

Wonders of the Invisible World by Christopher Barzark / GOD tHIS book was horrible. The prose was like a science textbook except no riveting anatomy illustrations. The characters had no personality whatsoever. The dialogue was really bad. WHYYY?? This had so much potential and I’m sad.

Flower Bouquet 2

Steamroller by Mary Calmes / hi i’m malanie and I’m addicted to Mary Calmes. There’s instalove and not much plot but I love her characters so much????? Nerd boy falls in love with football player and they’re cute together, ANd sometimes that’s all we need + Mary Calmes never fails with character names. I think she’s incapable of assigning bad names. The covers are low-budget but that’s the aesthetic????? and I’m thoroughly charmed????

Heart of the Race by Mary Calmes / Varro is hurt and his family’s crying but then his best friend Brian comes in and is angry and says if he doesn’t wake up, all secrets will be spilled and he’ll never forgive him for dying first. And Varro promptly wakes up and says, “u wouldn’t dare* ~BEST FRIEND HIGH FIVE SWOOP~

A Matter of Time by Mary Calmes (Books 1-5) / JORY IS THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. My favorite Mary Calmes, with an adorable boy with ADHD who always gets into trouble and everyone in the book in love with him. It’s addictive af and the plot somehow always surprises me?????

Flower Bouquet 2

Finding Zach by Rowan Speedwell / I loved how dark it was. But the leads have no real chemistry. This book actually kind of sucked.

Leo Loves Aries by Anyta Sunday / Birdie recommended this one and LSDJKFLJKLSDJ I love it so much??????? FIHVE BEAUTIFUL STAHRS. I have never read a more wholesome perfect couple, because THEY ARE BEST FRIENDS FIRST ALWAYS. They’re so affectionate and competitive and caring and protective and *the respect*. And Theo has dimples in his cheeks????? GOD IS KIND. Also the book features a badass blind girl who I want to marry and I realized that she was my first blind character.

Can we please quietly scream about how great non-romance books can be?! There aren’t enough imho.

There are some really great books on this post! I hope you enjoy Everything Leads to You as well! It’s not my favourite LaCour book but the F/F romance is the best!

Oh no, I’m so sad that you didn’t enjoy The Knife of Letting Go! I was hoping to read more of Patrick Ness, and that was on my TBR. And considering that I seem to agree with most of your taste in books, it must mean I won’t enjoy it either… *sobs* Although I didn’t know Tom Holland was gonna be in the movie! That’s pretty cool. 😉

I’m definitely with you on wondering where May has gone, actually I’m wondering where this whole year has gone because how is it nearly half over already?! 🙂
Great recap Malanie, and wow I am in awe over how many books you managed to get through, and on top of your thesis as well. How do you do it? Please share your secrets. 🙂
I’m sorry The Knife of Never Letting Go wasn’t a good read for you, but it seems like you’ve got some great books on your TBR list for June.
    Happy reading! 😀 ❤️

Thank you for the lovely shout-out and ily and you're the best ❤ ❤ I am #trash for Nina LaCour so I really hope you love Everything Leads To You. It's probably my favorite book of hers I've read 🙂 You were killing the game last month, so proud :')

My favorite read of the month was probably Things That Make White People Uncomfortable. It was so good and so informative. My life is so different now that I read it and also Foolish Hearts because duh! For June, I'm most excited to read Autoboyography 🙂

Man, how are you an English major and still find time to read books by yourself that aren’t part of your coursework? I’m jealous. I did my four years of undergrad as an English major and am finishing up my thesis as an English grad student and I honestly can’t remember the last time I read a book for fun. I’m working my way through my thesis reading list now and it’s just bleh.

I will say that thesis statements are the literal worst, and I am so happy that I never have to write another academic research paper again unless I see fit to do so!

My favorite read this month is definitely Circe, and I’m super excited about Running with Lions as well!

Also, look at you reading so many books this month ahhh. ❤
