July Wrap-Up ft. August TBR (+ I finally finished The Lightning Thief!!)

July was such a successful month for reading. I read eleven books and mostly enjoyed them all, including ~~~The Lightning Thief~~~!!!! I started Percy way back on May 11th, promptly lost the book (under my bed), triumphantly found it while cleaning (like an adult), and then was buried under Medieval Literature for college. Oh god it was a mess. My main takeaway from that class: I think Sir Gawain may have been bisexual. c: I can always hopppeeeee.

But with all that studying, my Spotify “essentials” playlist was finally nurtured. my new favorites:

  • Hang Me Up to Dry by the Cold War Kids
  • Murder Song by AURORA
  • Creep by Radiohead
  • Born to Be Blond by jesse rutherford
  • Too Good by Troye Sivan
  • Best Friend by Rex Orange County
  • Love by Lana Del Rey

#youknowyou’reabookpersonwheneverysongremindsyouofabookcharacter

And my Goodreads challenge is going swimmingly, I wish I could use this for job/scholarship applications. Gosh, I’d seem like a pro at life.

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James // 🌟🌟🌟🌟

The MC, Romy, is one of my new favorite female characters. SHE WAS JUST SO CUTE. Her fan fics, when she wonders how often people fall into quicksand on earth (THAT SWEETPEA), her love for romance novels. The book itself was written so well, the PLOT TWISTS. I couldn’t put this down.
And email/letter friendships always make me weak. ++ I got Star Trek vibes from the prose and imagery and I expected ~Captain Kirk~ to appear the whole time.

then he kind of did and it was v weird.

The Impossibility of Us by Katy Upperman // 🌟🌟🌟

A boy from Afghanistan and a girl from the States fall in love, despite prejudice from their families and the community. Mati and Elise made the cutest couple!! Mati was so fluffy and into poetry and romance and rainbows, and Elise was a more pragmatic cool-girl-next-door type. HOW CUTE MUST WE BECOME?

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan // 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I went into this with grand expectations and it turned out SO WELL. Percy’s voice!!!! THE GODS BEING PETTY AF. HADES!!!!Β  Already I adore Percy and Annabeth with the passion of a thousand Justin Timberlakes. Rick Riordan is so good with humor and writing setting. i’m rhapsodizing himmmmmm.

Β

The God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek // 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I was dazed and wandering around my kitchen because I was ~overcome~ with ~feelings~. A Western steampunk magical gay love story in which they give each other SPECIAL NICKNAMES.

Nicknames are my weakness, I will ship any couple who give each other special nicknames. And the nicknames get more intimate as they get to know each other!!!!????

We start with “little brother” and level up to “beloved friend” and finally reach “blood of my veins, my treasure.”

Volatile by Avylinn Winter // 🌟🌟🌟🌟

An NA contemporary romance about an emotional violinist and his depressed assistant. The prose for this was gorgeous and the plot was artistically understated and skdjfdskljf. SO MUCH ANGST. BUT THEY ARE BUTTERCUPS.

The Razor’s Edge by W Somerset Maugham // 🌟

I’ve had such bad luck with classics lately. This book was just awful. And the author makes himself a character in the story, which was so weird for me. I’m open-minded with expression and structure, but it’s so hard for me to take a book seriously when the author makes himself a character??? *i’m overwhlemed* “this is not supposed to happen” help

Β

Heroes for Ghosts by Jackie North // 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

THIS BOOK!!!!!! MY HEART. I CANNOT SPEAK. World War 1 and time traveling and the MOST PRECIOUS gay American Doughboy named Stanley.

Bear, Otter & the Kid by TJ Klune // 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I’m going through TJ’s backlist and oh god, he’s such an amazing author. His writing style is funny and sad at the same time, and ***THE FRIENDSHIPS***

Dubliners by James Joyce // 🌟

Why can’t all classics be as great as Jane Eyre? Will any classic novel be as amazing as Jane Eyre ever again???? *tumbles into sad black hole*Β  :’

Β

Scorpio Hates Virgo (Signs of Love #2) by Anyta Sunday // 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This series is painfully adorable, the BANTER, the CLUELESS RAINBOW. And the love interest in this one is a demipansexual. = satisfying rep

Gemini Keeps Capricorn (Signs of Love #3) by Anyta Sunday // 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Anyta Sunday doing what AnytaΒ  Sunday does best: the slow bantery evolution of friends-BEST friends-lovers. Just two boys doing their best and dressing like Sandy from Grease and being sweet.

posts I loved

Birdie gives an early review for Ravensong!!! I’ve been cruelly glaring at my mailman every time he leaves without delivering this book. Amazon’s slow shipping has turned me into a monster.

Oliva’s Collab post on 10 Ways to Enjoy Blogging, which has so many helpful reminders. It’s so easy to making blogging a chore instead of the fun it’s meant to be c:

Anna’s post on what to read when you’re in the mood for villains. I have such a blog crush

Beth’s review for Queens of Geek. I was so on the fence about committing to this book before Beth’s magical review powers convinced me ❀

Have you read any of these books? What are you most excited to read in August?

Are you doing a Goodreads challenge? Are we friends on Goodreads (bc we should be c:)?

You know, i really don’t know why reading couldn’t be something of a selling point.
Recently my friend interviewed a candidate who listed all sorts of random stuff on her cv, like playing piano and violin, baking, exercising. All important skills for working in an office πŸ˜†

I hate James Joyce so much! Whenever I whine to people (unfairly) about required school reading killing my love for classics Joyce is like #1 on my list! Have a great August!
