Historical YA ~Feminist~ Fiction ft. Aro Ace Rep
Pub. October 2nd 2018
My skin has taken a peachy glow of happiness. This book was just so amazing and Monty & Percy were there??!! + girls who love and support each other’s goals with everlasting friendship.
“Half my heart is hunger. My being is constructed by an aching to know the answers to every mystery of the frail ligaments that connected us to life and death. That wanting feels like part of me. It has seeped into my skin like mercury injected into a vein to trace its shape through the body. One drop colored my whole being. It was the only way I could see myself.”
She is my new icon for having goals and refusing to give up and having bad*ss friendships.
I love her. I want to be her friend.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the plot. I didn’t like GGVV’s either, so maybe it’s just Mackenzi Lee’s style I can’t vibe with? In both books, things are too low-key Rube Goldberg and not very grounded on a specific (realistic?) purpose.
I’m an organization freak.
One of my favorite things about this book is it’s focus on friendships. Felicity is aromantic and asexual, and we get ~hardcore friendship~!!!! Since platonic relationships are my favorite thing in the whole world, this was so great for me c:
Felicity’s amazing female friendships were front and center, and everyone was a badass girl with dreams and goals. Including an amazing pirate lesbian (or bi?) Muslim POC. I wanted to hold her closely and never let her go. I mean gosh!!!??? HER BIO!!!
And Mackenzi Lee makes sure to *show* the rep instead of just saying it exists. Felicity communicates her disinterest in romance and sex, and actively shows what she wants (or doesn’t want).
“Close seems too small a word for my childhood friend; Johanna an only child with an absent mother and farther often abroad, and I with parents who I was sure sometimes forgot my name, found a whole world within each other.”
And Felicity’s shining star determination at life??!! She never gives up on her dreams. This book is really a love story between Felicity and her goal to be a physician, and she refuses to let her patriarchal society take this from her.
She’s passionate and a true hero to us all. How Monty feels about Percy, Felicity feels about medicine. It was really inspiring for me, being in college, ((I’ve evolved into a disenchanted sloth)), to read a character so into her career.
But as much as I love Felicity, she’s definitely not flawless, and she has the Montague selfishness that I openly adore. Both she and Monty can be (roguishly) self-centered (they are my moonbeams) which leads to prejudices Felicity has to work past.
For example, she believes that being soft/cute/fluffy = being weak, which made me want to throw peanuts at her because NO. Soft is ~not~ weak. But she learns from her mistakes and emerges better than before.
It’s remarkable how being in the presence of books, even those you’ve never read, can have a calming effect, like walking into a crowded party and finding it full of people you know.”
Although Felicity is important and lovely and I adore her, Monty is my true love and I melted every time he made an appearance. ~Every time he made an appearance **with Percy**~
SO MUCH FLUFFY GAY DOMESTIC BLISS. Including:
- Comforting + doting on one another when sick/injured
- Being cute together while laughing and cuddling
- a continuation of the “legs under the table” series
- And Monty being an adorable, charming af, and supportive big brother???????? HE SUPPORTS FELICITY SO MUCH
- Percy *canon* being half of Monty’s heart.
- Percy assuring everyone that he’s “spoken for”
- Monty being dramatic ((and sweet and endearing)) and needed All The Attention™️
“Monty leans over and gives a gentle nip at Percy’s jaw, then presses a kiss to the same spot. “Oh, he loves it when I’m filthy.”
“Thank you, I’ve been consistently employed since we arrived in London,” Monty says. Percy coughs, and he adds, “Somewhat consistently.”
“But there he is, swaggering into the room in way that would have been ridiculous had he not been so good-looking”
Everyone should read Felicity’s book, especially if you loved her in book 1!! She stays just as ambitious and snarky and perfect.
*BUT I wish we could have an entire series from Monty’s POV.
((because it was so bittersweet to hear Felicity say, “and then Monty leaned and whispered into Percy’s hear and said something I could not hear”))
Me = OH MY GOD WHAT DID MONTY WHISPER TELL ME AT ONCE.))
Are you excited for Felicity???
