Scary Book Recs!! ft. 12 books that make me nervous

I love scary books, even though I’m obsessed with fluffiness. These are some of my favorites!!! + I’m currently listening to Sadie by Courtney Summers and I’M SO SCARED PLEASE SEND GENTLE HUGS.

So much stress. My review is going to be endless tears and concern.

Death Note

My first manga!!! I’m only on page 120, but it’s already dark and October-ey.  A bored, intellectual high school boy finds a special notebook outside. He investigates! and realizes he can write names in it and KILL???? So far it’s creepy af.

Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom (Death Note, #1)

As I Descended by Robin Talley

Sapphic Macbeth! Shakespeare is inherently dark, especially with Macbeth. Make it f/f and put it in a high school AU???? I’m invested please bless me on this journey.

As I Descended

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett

I feel like this will be low-key terrifying.

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer

Inside My Library Mind rec’d this to me and I want to read it so much!!!?????

Vampires, Frankenstein, dragons, and killing fields. ++FRIENDSHIP! at this point, all you have to do to get me to read something is point at it and say “behold! ’tis friendship!”

The House of the Scorpion (Matteo Alacran, #1)

1 Bouquet

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

My sister calls this “subtly frightening” and vague descriptions automatically freak me out. The cover!!!!

Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1)

1 Bouquet

Anatomy of a Murderer by Tim Floreen

This book is SO UNDERRATED!!????? It haunts me every day. This felt existentially scary for me, it took at least 3 days to recover.

M/M romance, but the love interest is a murderer. TW: violence in a school setting

Anatomy of a Murderer

Evenfall (In the Company of Shadows #1) by Ais

This has such a big fan base on Tumblr (I’m deeply part of this fandom). It’s such a great series!!!!

Post-apocalyptic world with gay assassins. And it’s free online..

Evenfall (In the Company of Shadows, #1)

The Wicker King by K Ancrum

Another severely underrated book. While reading this I felt so unsettled??? + I loved the couple SO MUCH. Their love is so pure, but tragically put under horrible circumstances.

The Wicker King

The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic

I know what you’re thinking. “Hun your attempts at including TFC in all things is not subtle”

But there is nothing more terrifying than “Baltimore’s calling.” If you’re a fan YOU KNOW.

*rushes to protect Neil Josten*

The Foxhole Court (All for the Game, #1)

Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Steifvater

Does this series make anyone else slightly petrified??? I was so scared, and I felt deeply flawed because no one else talks about this book being scary. BUT THIS WAS SO DAMN SCARY.

**aDaM aRe yOu oKaY??**

Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle, #3)

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

In this story, each kid has their own door, and your world is either Corpse Bride/Nightmare Before Christmas or soft Alice in Wonderland.

I was in love but also noivous.

Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E Schwab

Magicians. INHERENTLY SCARY.

A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1)

Mal, you’re so soft that your scary book recommendations are really not that scary 😂 I mean, The Foxhole Court, realllyyyy?? Though, I appreciate your dedication to recommending it in every post, I hope more people read it and love it as much as I do!
I need to read Every Heart a Doorway and The Wicker King, they both sounds amazing and I want to get my hands on them. 🙈
Thank you for the recommendations! ❤ This was a lovely post as always!

Death Note is soo creepy. I haven’t read the manga, but I’ve seen the Japanese live action films and watched half the anime. Half, you may ask? It kinda got a little too depressing for me and I couldn’t watch any more! I’ll be interested to hear what you think about it 😀

I for sure prefer the manga, I think I stopped w the anime half-way through the first season. It did follow the manga almost exactly though whihc was s o c o o l

ooh this post is so spooky & seasonal!! also YES no one talks about how Blue Lily, Lily Blue and Every Heart a Doorway are kinda scary?? THEY MAKE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH CHARACTERS AND THEN THEY PUT THE CHARACTERS IN DANGER. WITH SO MUCH SUSPENSE. literally what could be scarier than that lmk

Nevernight has been on my owned tbr for approx 1000 years. maybe i should try to get to it now, if it’s “vaguely scary” and thereby seasonally fitting??? but lol probs not that would mean having my life together.

    love the post!!

AHHH TYSMMMMM. oh god, all I wanted was to protect Gansey??? he was so helpless and adventurous and wholesome?????? And then Adam started acting REALLY STRANGE and I was distressed af sdklfjlskjd
also I am relating so hard to your Nevernight dilemma: “I should get to it…but that would mean having my life together” ==== my inner dialogue for the last two years

That Nevernight cover is so creepy! I just put Good Omens on my list because the series is coming out! I’d say its more amusing than scary though? At least I hope otherwise I’m totally judging that one wrong. This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers and Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix are my top scary book pics 🙂

I’m not a massive fan of scary books, but some of these are favourites of mine because they hit the right mark of being amazing but not too scary for me to handle! 😀
The Shades of Magic series is one of my all-time favourites, so I really really REALLY hope you love A Darker Shade of Magic, and actually I’ll let you know this because I feel like it was your blog that put this book on my radar I’m going to be starting The Foxhole Court tomorrow. I’ve heard so much about it I’m really interested to start it and see what it’s actually like.
Nevernight is probably as ‘horror’ as my reading choices will get, but I wouldn’t say it was a horror book like Carrie is a horror movie you know? I loved it.
Great post, and great picks too. 🙂 ❤

Kind of strange that your friend says that I think, I mean I’ve been book blogging for nearly three years now and I’ve never spoke about Stephen King, in fact there are plenty of authors I’ve never spoken about.
Yay, let me know what you think, and actually I finished the whole of the All for the Game series on Friday, I was kind of hooked and sped read through all three books (the last time I was this hooked on a book series was when I read the Chaos Walking trilogy a few years back). 😀 Safe to say I loved it. 🙂 ❤

I’M CRYING!!!!!!!!! I’M SO GLAD YOU LIKED THE SERIES??????? I feel so overwhelmed, you’re my first friend who ended up loving i t like I did, WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER?
also can we please have a moment for “yes or no” ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Yeah it was amazing! I kind of want more from all the characters so I will definitely be re-reading the trilogy at some point.
Favourite character probably Neil, but I did love Matt and Nicky too. Also yes the consent thing was really well done especially considering both character’s pasts, I loved all the ‘yes or no’s’. 🙂 ❤

oh gosh I’ve read the trilogy three times so far, and I need another reread, I just love it even more every time???? (i’m extremely obsessed lskdflsk) AHHHH I’M SO GLAD YOU PICKED NEIL!!!! He’s just so perfect, his demisexual rep + literally EVERYONE wants to mother him XD he’s just such a brave little toaster??????
My sister and I always get into a debate as to which boy loves Neil best, Matt or Nicky, and I think Nicky just because Neil spends more time with him, studying, eating ice cream, etc. But Matt CARES FOR HIM SO MUCH THO. I just imagine them all having custody battles over who gets Neil, after they graduate XD

I’ll definitely be re-reading it again, I’ll wait a while though because I’ve just finished it of course. 😀 It was great seeing demisexual rep, and I’ve got to say I agree with your sister because I think Matt. As much as Nicky loves him I think Matt cares for him just that little bit more. Matt is like his mum and Nicky is like his older brother in my mind you know?
Ha, yeah that’d be an epic custody battle right?! 😀 ❤

OMG YOU ARE TEAM MATT!!!!!! But that is such a good point, he realyl does have that extremely protective side, like when he sleeps by Neil’s side in book 3??????? BECAUSE NEIL NEEDED TO BE NURTURED????
And I can totally see Nicky fulfilling that brother role, he always provides gossip and tries to force Neil to have fun XD
