This week’s Top Five Tuesday from Bionic Book Worm is about books that didn’t turn out great and now I’m devastated. I tend to…form unhealthily obsessions invest in books, then when they break my heart??????? IT’S TOO MUCH.
Here are the top five in recent history that I felt strongly disappointed in.
1. The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
I know!!!!!! HOW COULD I HATE THIS??????? It’s a mystery, has a name in the title, and the cover is really nice. However. I couldn’t get into the protagonist.
When I can’t love the protagonist, it’s all over.
2. Fame Fate and the First Kiss
My very first Kasie West and the plot felt like elevator music. TRAGIC, that’s what this was. I just wanted something to happen which wasn’t the standard “meeting-a-cute-boy-unexpectedly” plot.
But Kasie West said “Embrace the f’ing teen spirit.”
3. How To Love
*fumes*
Sawyer. Oh god. He made me want to stab him. There are so many ways to handle your secret baby when you’re a teen parent.
He represents the a**hole way to approach this.
Everyone is shocked I didn’t like this. I’m both shocked and DISTRESSED. Emma Mills is my HERO. MY FRIENDSHIP REP HERO.
I was supposed to have a long, thriving relationship with Foolish Hearts. I don’t know what happened. I’m still confused.
Maybe I was feverish? There are tears in my eyes skdfjlkdsjflkdsj
5. And I Darken
I have one name for you. R a d u. I’m starting a GoFundMe for Radu to be flicked aggressively in the eye.
Have you felt disappointed by any of these books? What’s been you’re most disappointing book so far this year?
-malanie c:
I’m sorry these were all so disappointing for you, but oh my gods, RADU. I HATE RADU SO MUCH. I know everyone loves him but I do not understand why. I managed to deal with him in book 2 enough to still love it, but he was 90% of what RUINED book 3 for me and has effectively knocked that series off my “loved series” list forever.

lskdfjlskj I’m so overwhelmed bc U UNDERSTAND MY RADU FEELINGS????!!!!!!
I was so shocked when everyone loved him and doted upon him because he’s high-key a jerk!! he’s too manipulative, he’s tricked even the readers

SAME. HARD SAME. Like I know everyone sees him as this cute lil gay bean but he is AWFUL?? And I literally threw my ARC of Now I Rise at the end over his stupid stunt.

OMG I HATED THE SEVEN DEATHS OF EVELYN HARDCASTLE AND AND I DARKEN!!! They both sucked!!! Everyone I met has loved both of those titles.

OMG I FEEL SO HAPPY YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY?????!!!!!! i am no longer all alone in this “seven-deaths-and-i-darken” loving world

I hated both of them! Everyone raved about them and I just couldn’t stand the characters in And I Darken, plus the book was super slow moving and dull. And The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle would have made a great movie, but as a book it was impossible to feel like I knew who the main character truly was. I felt so disconnected from him because of the plot. As a movie it would have been great, but as a book the execution was lacking.

im just gonna casually pretend you didn’t break my heart by including foolish hearts on this list (jk jk, opinions are validddd) BUT I FEEL YOU SO HARD ON EVELYN HARDCASTLE
i was so bored, like excellent premise but the execution was yaaawwwnnn
sad to hear about kasie west, ive been finding her books to be so repetitive lately meh
great post tho!! ❤

OMG BUT I BROKE MY OWN HEART W FOOLISH HEARTS. i plan to reread it, and obviously love it bc I am a dedicated Emma Mills human and i refuse to accept the shockingly low rating. I’m 1000% calling it an incident of a mood reader gone mad c”””””:

I haven’t read any of these, but want to read Evelyn Hardcastle 😀
Bummer it didn’t work out for you, but i get it. If the main character doesn’t click with you, it can ruin the whole thing

Norrie you must save yourself and run away from Evelyn Hardcastle at all costs (ily and must warn youuuuu)

Awah I am so sad you didn’t like Evelyn Hardcastle but I totally get it – it’s a tough book setup for engaging with the MC.

omg I was SO SHOCKED WITH MYSELF!!! because I’m really into mysteries here lately, and the VE Schwab aesthetic, and I thought going into this book that it had that vibe. so sad lskdjflkdsjfkl

I read the book I think before the hype train was full steam ahead, so I think I was able to go in without high expectations. I am sorry it didn’t work for you though!

Evelyn Hardcastle’s ending was totally weird for me. I didn’t hate it but… issues! Pretty sure I blocked Radu and Mehmed out from And I Darken 🙂 Everyone else stayed though. I think The Poppy War is the one that didn’t live up to the hype big time at least for me.

oh my god no,,,, weird endings!!!!!! THEY ARE TRULY THE WORST. just mentioning them strikes actual fear into my very soul, I’m in danger of having a meltdown w any unsatisfying endings ldkfjsjx, dks
Also I agree, I tried to focus on my girl Lada, but Radu and Mehmed kept galloping into every scene GOSH. I shipped Lada w her childhood best friend!!!!! THEY DESERVE EVERY HAPPINESS. (so far)
I haven’t hear of the Poppy War, but that title!!!!! it’s a title that has so much to live up to

I loved And I Darken! But on my post one that left me disappointed and is so hyped was looking for Alaska by John Green….

OMG *cries* I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT ALASKA BY JOHN GREEN!!!!!?????? I read that while on a road trip, and once i finished I just stared out at the road with sadness and despair and disappointment. There was no redemption or moral to the story for me?????? I honestly can’t see a point to that book besides upsetting everyone and leaving us deeply dissatisfied.

Oh it sucks when books don’t live up to the hype right? There have been a few recently for me and it always sucks. Kasie West has been kind of a hit or miss author for me, some of her latest books have been all right and I enjoyed Love, Life and the List so I’m hoping I’ll enjoy Fate, Fame and the First Date somewhat too.
Also it sucks you didn’t enjoy And I Darken, I really enjoyed that book and the whole trilogy actually but I suppose at least you can say you tried reading it right? 🙂
Great post, and hopefully the next book you pick up will be better. 😀 ❤

oh god, there is nothing worse!!!!!! wellllll, maybe when a book is really great up until the end, THEN totally fails. *is terrified*
But when you’re really looking forward to a book and you just can’t get into it, OMG it leaves me feeling so emotionally drained.
+ I think I might try to finish the trilogy, bc everyone says Radu gets better?? and I want to believe in him! I WANT HIM TO LEARN AND GROW. He has potential, I’ll give him that. Maybe he just needs to mature a smol bit.

Oh god disappointing ends are worse than books not living up to the hype in my opinion. Personally I think Radu does get better. There’s a lot of character development in the trilogy so no one really ends up the same as who they started out you know? I’m sure if you do continue with it by the time you read the end of the trilogy you’ll love him. 😀

I find it hard to like a book when I couldn’t care less about the protagonist… Why should I care what happened if I couldn’t stand being in their head???? Case in this point is The Knife of Never Letting Go.

omggggg I am so happy you feel that way too about The Knife of Never Letting Go!!!?????? the protagonist was just so immature and he stressed me out SO MUCH. I was constantly sighing w pure exasperation

LOL this is a beautiful post😂😂😂 But seriously, I heard the characters in And I Darken were annoying so I haven’t read it😅

AHHH TYSM KAYA c: c: c: oh god, the only character I could tolerate was Lada and her childhood best friend, everyone else was so whiny. I was constantly wishing I could gently explain to them that they live in an intense society and they must mature past five years old at some pointttt. ///I’M LOOKING AT YOU, RADU.////

This is such a sassy post, and I love it- I’m so sorry that 7 Deaths didn’t live up to the hype for you though!! I do get what you mean though… the protagonist is a little bit of a blank slate, really!

oh gosh my Evelyn Hardcastle opinion is so unpopular and I wanted to love it SO MUCHHH. I wish the mc were just a little less bland. sdlkfjlskj bc it had the best potential of 2018!!!

I hated Radu in the first book, but he improves in the sequels. I’m hesitant to finish the last book because of Lada’s constant fighting.

OMG I’M SO HAPPPYYYY!!!! Bc Radu has so much potentialy, I just hope he gets over his Mehmed unrequited love thing????? AND I NEED LADA TO BE NURTURED KLJFDLKSJF

Not quite. He still loves him. However, Radu sees how flawed Mehmed is and how dangerous his obsession of conquering is turning out to be.
Surprisingly, I liked his character development than Lada’s

I loved Evelyn Hardcastle! But I’m the same. I need to be able to connect with the main character otherwise the book just doesn’t do it for me. I was like that with Black Bird of the Gallows. Stunning cover, really unique mythology but I just didn’t click with the Mc and that was it.
Another book I was a little disappointed with was The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I really wanted to love it but it was just ok …

oh god that is always THE WORST!!!! when everything is great expect the MC, and it’s so tragic bc my love for protagonists outshines all other things??????
