November Wrap-Up ft. the month I fell in love with Evelyn Hugo & The Kiss Quotient & Foolish Hearts ((what a journey))

Beginner's Guide to Contempory!!! (1).png

November was a wonderful month!!!????? I did NaNoWriMo and made it to 43,220 words which is the most I’ve ever written for a book in my life?? Usually I start stories and after roughly 10,000 words I just think “well this is sh*t” But in this instance I’ve made significant progress. /SOMUCHSUCCESS/

I also did  a Read and Chill-a-thon with Becca from Bookishly Rebecca and had an amazing time c: I wrote all of my reviews on Goodreads because my blogging life was struck with Saitama’s fist in the form of NaNo.

I’m also taking college poetry anddddd LET ME JUST SAY. my poetry is so bad that my professor at one point wrote on my assignment,,,,”this doesn’t make sense at all.” lol *cries*

here is a sample for your enjoyment (i had to write prose poetry about a skeleton AFTER Halloween, so let’s discuss, is any of this really my fault?)

sample 1

**when you try to be The Nightmare Before Christmas 2002. I don’t know why writing prose v. a prose POEM is such a huge difference for me??? But the difference is so vast. I have so much more confidence in writing stories than in writing a poem,,,,even if my creative process is pretty much the same. But hopefully this class will give me more of a badass? because I really do love poetry? Lana Del Rey +++ Emily Dickinson ❤ GOSH. I WOULD DIE FOR THEMMMM

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan// 2.5/5 stars

the romance and main character were underwhelming : (

But this was such great representation for Asian culture! I’m proud that this book exists, but I didn’t have fun with it & I’m going to cry.

Girls of Paper and Fire (Girls of Paper and Fire, #1)

1 Bouquet

The Great Unexpected by Dan Mooney// 4/5 stars

such an intense story of friendship???? HOW DARE THEY?? Two old men in a retirement home become best friends and I had no idea how much I’d cherish them

The Great Unexpected

1 Bouquet

Once and Future by Amy Rose Capetta// 2/5 stars

just an intense & boomingg “”meh””. We had a wonderfully gay Merlin and a pansexual gender-bent Arthur but,,,,,this plot failed miserably.

Once & Future (Once & Future, #1)

1 Bouquet

29 Dates by Melissa De La Cruz // 2/5 stars

This book was extremely boring 😦

There was Korean rep and I loved the beginning of the book, which took place in the actual country of Korea. But everything else about this book nearly hurtled my body into a reading slump. I would have gone willingly into the void.

29 Dates

1 Bouquet

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo // 3/5 stars

This was so hard to review! I loved the main character and her dream of becoming a chef + the relationship with her daughter, but I was triggered by her child’s dad. He was so controlling & unhealthy & hard for me to read sdlkj

With the Fire on High

1 Bouquet

Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills // 5/5 stars

*tries not to cry && fails again*

I originally read this while in an absurd place and I gave it 2 stars, but then I brushed the dust from my sanity and reread and ////gosh//// there are stars in my eyes and I can’t see.

Foolish Hearts

1 Bouquet

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid // 5/5 stars

You can read my review for this here ❤ Evelyn Hugo is flawless I dare you not to instantly love her. I feel so protective of her???? STOP SHE IS MINE.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

1 Bouquet

On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta// 5/5 stars

I can’t believe I read this in November, it feels like I read it roughly three to eleven months ago. But this was an excellent book with friendship and found family and consistent sobbing on my part THROUGHOUT. 🙂

On the Jellicoe Road

1 Bouquet

Tell Us Something True by Dana Reinhardt // 2/5 stars

The prose in this was so good???? the character’s voice??? But the plot and relationships were dead weight and I mourned them both.

Tell Us Something True

1 Bouquet

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang // 5/5 stars

I read this as part of the Read and Chill-a-thon with Becca:: Read a Book Someone Has Recommended To You. This is one of the best romances I’ve ever read. Asperger’s rep + her love interest is Korean.

also Michael the male lead = Song Joong-ki in my imagination always

The Kiss Quotient (The Kiss Quotient, #1)

1 Bouquet

Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel by Sara Farizan // 2/5 stars

Another Read and Chill book! :: Read a New to You Author. This wasn’t very good, there was a lot of trying very hard to be good. I was just expecting a thriving gay love story??? Instead it was a mediocre bildungsroman sprinkled with toxic romance *just because*.

Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel

1 Bouquet

Roomies by Christina Lauren // 2/5 stars

I think I’m destined to only love Josh & Hazel’s Guide + Autoboyography by these authors. But you know what, it’s f i n e.

1 Bouquet

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde // 2/5 stars

This is Read and Chill-a-thon: Read a Book Featuring Your Favorite Trope (best friends – lovers). This ended up boring but maybe cute?? 💜 KIND 💜 OF 💜 LIKE 💜 ME 💜

Okay I’m back. Yes, Nanowrimo does help us be more productive, doesn’t it? I almost completely abandoned my blog and my books just to reach 50K, though. 😂 And I finally published my latest blog post after not posting for three months, lol. Nevertheless, it’s good to make more progress on my fiction writing in November. I really want to finish writing this series, honestly. I’m writing the fourth book, and I hope it won’t be any longer! 😂

On poetry, oh, that reminds me of something I wrote in middle school English class, something about “the air cracking with honey”. The teacher didn’t like how unrealistic that sounded (the image made zero sense to her), and she was totally against making up words. T_T But a famous poem, the Jabberwocky, consisted of mostly made-up words!!

Honestly I don’t understand why some poetry teachers are so close-minded when it comes to different poetic styles. Different writers are drawn to different things. I personally liked the poetry piece you posted. 😊 It’s very dream-like. Reminded me a bit of William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, actually.

oh gosh, NaNo was SO BRUTAL!!!!?????? this was my first, and I pretty much haven’t seen another human being in weeks because I’ve been hiding with my laptop in my room, writing as fast as I can XD i’m taking inspiration from you, that’s so amazing and incredible that you’re working on your FOURTH!!!!??? book. ❤ ❤

+ I love the honey metaphor, i love when writing makes me see things in a new wayyyy and that's a gorgeous line.

also AHHH thank you so much c: c: c: one of my friends is 80 years old and she said that your writing could be the sweetest peach, and some people in the world just don't like peaches XD it made me feel so much better sldkflskdjf

Thank you, you are so encouraging! 😊 I feel that there should be especially more freedom in poetry. Isn’t it called poetic license? Yeah I also love it when writing helps me see things in a new way.

LOLL the reason why I can write so much, is that I rely on the “shitty draft method”. So you turn off your inner editor (or mostly turn it off), and you write and write until you’re done your first draft. Then you can take as much time as you want to edit it. Well for me, I write 2,000 something words, then I would do quick edits (to make the writing smoother and easier to understand). Next, I would write the next 2,000 ish words and repeat this process until the book is done! The in-depth editing will come after the whole series is finished, lol.

True, true. How could some people not like peaches?? D: But then I have a friend who doesn’t understand why I don’t like mint, because, in her opinion, most people like mint, haha.

Your December TBR looks good 🙂 Hope you’ll enjoy them all.
I tried reading the Secret History a few years ago but couldn’t really get into it. But recently i’m kinda playing with the idea of trying it again. Probably only next year tho.

Life, being what it is, made dedicating time to reading difficult for me. I have said December will be better. We will see. A Secret History is long and tedious, but excellent. Good choice.

“I’m proud that this book exists, but I didn’t have fun with it”

WORD. Ugh I wish this wasn’t so relatable but OW, my heart. 😦 It was one of my most anticipated releases of 2018 yet here I sit with my little 3.5 star rating lmao.

But I’m so glad you loved Evelyn and TKQ ♥♥♥

Congrats on NaNo Malanie! 😀 I didn’t quite reach my 50k word goal in November but actually what I wrote that month was more than I wrote the whole rest of the year so I was more than happy with what I ended up with. I think anything we write is an achievement isn’t it?
Also good luck with your poetry/prose course. I’ve never written poetry (or even read it) honestly I just don’t think it’s my medium (I’ll stick to stories).
You’ve got some great books on your TBR list for December. I really love Strange the Dreamer and The Love That Split the World so I’ll be very eagerly awaiting your reviews on those two. I can’t wait to see what you think of them. 😀
Great recap, and happy reading. I hope you have an incredible December! 🙂 ❤

ahhh thank you Beth!!!! ❤ oh god I agree w my entire heart, just writing anything is really an achievement. V.E Schwab said she has trouble getting to 300 words in a day, & ever since I read that I've felt better about myself as a person XD

also thank youuuu, I've been trying to go w unusual courses, just because I need a smol break from writing endless essays (((but it turns out poetry is bewildering af kldsjflksj)))))))

++ I'm so exited to try Emily Henry!!!!! the titles for her books are just so genius & the premise!!!?????

ilysm & i hope your December is going amazing as welllllll ❤ ❤ ❤

That’s all right, and oh that actually makes me feel a little better too. If one of my all-time favourite authors struggles with words we can’t be blamed for being in the same boat can we?
Poetry will definitely be that something different I’m sure, you may even end up preferring it, and thanks Malanie! 🙂 ❤️

Sorry still haven’t elaborated on my previous comment, and this comment will need to be elaborated on too later, haha.

But wow!! We have a very different opinion on This is How a Crush Should Feel. This book is one of my favorite gay romances ever. 😂😂😂 I tend to be very hard to please when it comes to lesbian romances too (I don’t know why…), but I was very happy with this book, haha.

I can always count on Emma Mills to write a good book she’s an underrated queen. AND OMG CONGRATS ON ALMOST COMPLETING NANO!!! I’m glad to see that even though I failed (i wrote 100 words lmao) others did well 🙂 The best poetry are the ones where you don’t understand anything *wink*

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED EVELYN HUGO! It was my best read this year!!! Hey I’m reading Roomies right now and I think it’s an okay read for me, I can’t wait to read Josh and Hazel though! I’ve heard so many great things about The Hating Game, I hope you’ll enjoy that one!!

if we aren’t given an Evelyn Hugo movie or Netflix original tv series at some point in the near future, I’m going to feel cheated.

also, Roomies could have been so much better!!!??? the potential was SO STRONG, but it was no Josh and Hazel &&&& that is unforgivable.
