Book adaptations are my life and soul. Even if I haven’t read the book sometimes I’ll still watch the adaptation and enjoy it to pieces. BOOKS ARE JUST SO PRECIOUS TO ME. And it’s nice to see this world adapting & appreciating them.
I’m also 100% fine with watching the movie first/the Netflix thing first. for instance, I haven’t read Dumplin’ but netflix made it SO CUTE! AND SOFT!
It doesn’t get much softer than Millie saying, “i made your folder yellow bc you remind me of sunshine.”
why is her heart so pure????? MILLIE, DAMN IT. YOU MADE ME CRY.
Basically, this film was about a fat teenage girl named Willowdean, who enters a beauty pageant with her friends in her small Texas town. She’s tired of shit beauty standards, which are perpetuated by her beauty queen mom,
so! she’s going to (sabotage? at the very least, upset) the system! She also works at a diner where A CUTE BOY IS HER FELLOW EMPLOYEE????? AND HIS NAME IS BO???????????????
I loved Bo. He was so charming and lovable and had a dimple and he doesn’t try to be non-Bo. He just wants to date Willowdean and work at the small town diner! PROTECT!
It was just such a relaxing film, Willowdean Dickson gives us fat rep & wholesome girl friendship & learning to love Dolly Parton. I was never a fan of Dolly????? But now I feel a strange affection for her.
Every year I travel to Tennessee with my family and GOSH. Tennessee adores Dolly Parton
an unhealthy amount so much. I went to a bookstore in Nashville and guess what 75% of the merchandise was. that’s right. it was Michael Jackson stuff.
i’m still appalled because They kept non-Dolly related books in the back, near where they take out the trash. now if that’s not a bold ass statement.
I clearly didn’t appreciate Dolly before watching Dumplin’. (i’m no longer welcome in the Gatlinburg area) But NOW? AT THIS POINT?
Willowdean has instilled my newfound grudging acknowledgement for Dolly. It’s hard for me not to appreciate things once I see a character obsess over said things.
characters losing their minds over their choice obsession lets me vicariously give a shit about life okay bye
Overall, I would give Dumplin’ a solid 4/5 stars, for being small Texan town aesthetic af +++ the existence of cute innocent Millie.
Also, the friendship between Ellen and Willowdean was nice.
NETFLIX YOU DID WELL.
In general, I love book adaptations. They bring to life what we have in our heads, which is that sorcery stuff I’ve been trying to tell you all about. Adaptations help the story reach a wider audience and draw others into the pile of fandom! & that means more enjoyment?????
AND FRIENDSHIP! You can have a buddy read + a film viewing and BOOP, //////insta-friendship.//////
I fondly remember bonding with my friend over BBC’s Wuthering Heights + Pride and Prejudice + Jane Eyre. WE LITERALLY FLAILED, because BBC stays so true to the books. ((((not that I require absolute faithfulness in my adaptations.
I will die on the hill that says we get creative license. it’s one of the many hills I’d die on. in fact, i’m thinking of combining all of the hills and forming a mountain. i want to die as extra as possible))))))))
Also, time to be real. Sometimes I just don’t want to read the whole damn book. SOME BOOKS ARE REALLY THICK AND TOO MUCH FOR STANDARD ME. for instance, I’d much rather watch the film for War and Peace & then decide if I can fit the book in my life span.
If the ending sucks, why dedicate 10 years to the book (((a rough equivalent of how long it takes to read W&P)?
Overall, I just really appreciate adaptions. Especially if Netflix is involved in any way.
I have SO MANY BOOKS that need to be films OR BETTER YET, TV SHOWS. These are books with amazing plots, characters, and action that would easily translate to screen.
And I would sell my soul to lucifer for them. c:
Murder! Found Family! Pretentious University Kids! Shakespeare! Gay Boys! Netflix, why aren’t you cashing in on this????
I think it was twitter where I read someone mention our need for a Netflix Original in which each episode corresponds to each of her seven husbands. That’s seven hours of pure 🙂 Evelyn 🙂 content 🙂
I live in fear that I’ll die without seeing this amazing story on screen, which is what it deserves. Gays and fiction sports and found family and the mafia??????? EXCUSE ME.
A man in prison falls in love with his English tutor, and at one point he CRIES ON HER SHOULDER??? Because yes, girls can be comforting and strong and boys can sob against their neck. I would love to see this acted out with actors, hopefully featuring Rami Malek?
Rep for how exhausting school truly is. This is going to be the softest horror movie ever made.
This book wasn’t that good. but I love movies about space! And friendship! And charming teens who have problems with authority! This could basically be Star Trek but with a bisexual Kirk and platonic intimacy.
What are some of your favorite adaptations?
What book do you want to see on Netflix?
I never post on Sunday so this is very strange. pls don’t make me go awayyyyyy
