Top Five Reasons I Love Reading!!! ft. my favorite characters + piles of books

Top Five Tuesday (7).png

I was completely UNPREPARED to answer this question and really think about it????? I have never outright and thoughtfully questioned why I love reading + no one’s ever asked.

It’s a tiny bit outrageous because,,,I’m srsly shocked and I haven’t been shocked for so long? and it’s such an OBVIOUS thing to think about

I think people just assume that reading works for some people (book nerds) and just doesn’t for others? It’s something you inherently accept about someone. For instance, you don’t explain your favorite song or your eye color. you just have it and no one asks questions

Gosh, it feels so intrinsic to my very personality and I don’t know how to EXPLAIN IT????? but we shall try.

i’m truly sorry for how much i’m going to flail and screw everything up forgive me

1. Characters!!!

The thing I value most about reading is when I feel that intense emotional connection to characters. Soft lads, villains, the relationships between them. they’re all incredibly important to me & no one is allowed to hurt them [raises fist]

Most of my life is me reading a book entirely for 1 special soft sunshine or badass girl or sociopath mess (or sometimes characters with other qualities) and I won’t emerge from my room for days.  they become so real?????? i honestly pls don’t lock me in the attic believe they are real in their own right.

Some characters I personally love: Neil Josten, Damen and Nikandros, Gansey, Hazel Bradford, Maud Lilly, Sloane, Evelyn Hugo, Finny

2. You can be, do, and feel anything

One of the best things about a book is being immersed in it. When you read, you identify with the characters and sensory language, and spend HOURS going through it all. immersion is my favorite invention

+ you learn so much tolerance for other people and situations????? And you learn that even if you’re different than someone, they still deserve the right to be unapologetically themselves, just as much as you do.

Authentic, weird af characters are my absolute favorite. So, I try not to give a shit about being normal, because you don’t see Kaz Brekker attempting any semblance of conformity

3. making friends!

I have made so many friends through books??????? The book community is v warm and welcoming and NICE; i’m so grateful to know everyone i’ve met here.

In general, talking about books is a foolproof way to have long, deep conversations with others ❤

(even if you’re like me & have no idea how to talk to people because you have crippling social anxiety *sad double thumbs up*)

4. reading makes you an inherently cool person

I feel like if someone has a bookshelf in their house,,,,,,or better yet a giant, physically dangerous pile of their favorite books stacked in their bedroom,,,,,then they’ve achieved the universal standard of being cool.

You already KNOW that person chooses to spend a long ass time LEARNING and being sappy over characters and is probably ready to launch into a detailed explanation of why their favorite book should be cherished.

in sum, they are charming and sensitive and overall a quality person. All thanks to friendly neighborhood reading. 🙂

5. reading teaches you how to write like a gorgeous artist

Not every reader enjoys/wants to write, but in my case, reading has 100% taught me how to be a writer. I’ve read so much and at this point, stories have become everything.

Becoming obsessed with books makes me want to write something with my OWN brain that will make other people feel things. I JUST WANT ATTENTION AND PRAISE. Basically obsession has become my best virtue and it’s all because of books and writing.

(i am trash and have no other skill set)

What do you love about books?

What was the first book that made you fall in love with reading?

also the completely random images of books from my Instagram symbolizes my chaotic adoration and dedication (and not that i ran out of time to find organized things, so just pasted whatever i saw first)

This is such an awesome post; I love your energy and your photos so much!! and i love reading for the characters, they’re all my children and i must protect my cinnamon rolls at all cost is a constant mood. AND i also read because of my OTPs? I live for shipping characters, and slow -burn romances and screaming “KISS ALREADY!!” also the adrenaline when you’re reading an action-packed book IS THE BEST and i love it! awesome post ❤

Great post! I so grok seeing the characters as real in their own right. I’ve come to feel that authors tap into other realms, serving as chroniclers of a sort. My theoretical physicist SO thankfully doesn’t think I’m bugnuts. He feels it a perfectly acceptable theory given how much we really don’t know.

I don’t know what book sparked my love for reading. I think it was more my grandmother’s influence. The first favourite book I can recall having was Leo the Lop, part of Stephen Cosgrove’s Serendipity series.

I feel so genuinely ATTACKED right now Mal, WHAT IS THIS BEAUTIFUL POST AND WHY AM I JUST NOW READING THIS. It’s like you broke into my brain and somehow made sense of all my Feels™ in the form of actual coherent sentences and I am in awe.
People ask me why I love reading so many times and I’m just a jumble of hand gestures and exclamation points w no words bc HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN SOMETHING THAT’S SO INTRINSICALLY A PART OF YOUR VERY PERSONALITY????
There’s just something about opening a book and goddamn falling into it. Suddenly, you’re in a whole different atmosphere w different surroundings and people and dialogue and holy shit. It’s fun and addictive as hell.
Can you believe there are people out there who think reading is *boring*???? I mean. Excuse you. I don’t see you being obsessed with soft assassins and thieves and morally grey characters or plotting loop holes or world domination in your mind and so what if it’s weird, we should all be weirdly passionate about something (yes, I made that reference and I partially blame you).
Okay but what you said about wanting to create something with your brain that gives other people the Feels™????? same. that’s all I have to say.

How u explain your reaction to when ppl ask why u love reading = exactly my immediate reaction, it took me 578 hours to create this post bc how??? on earth??????????? do we COMMUNICATE BOOK FEELINGS, if someone asked me to talk about it randomly i would not know how to deal with it at all, my brain would lose focus it would be sad

But i could also just say::::: “well one time Nims said, ‘There’s just something about opening a book and goddamn falling into it. Suddenly, you’re in a whole different atmosphere w different surroundings and people and dialogue and holy shit. It’s fun and addictive as hell.’

And yes that is exactly where i’m at emotionally forever, i would like to shout it from the rooftops

Also when u made the //we should all be weirdly passionate/// reference i was v emotional and oh gosh i cherish our friendship sm ❤

Ahh, Malanie, this post is so wonderful and I RELATE SO MUCH. ❤

Character, YES PLEASE, THEY ARE EVERYTHING. You know firsthand my immense love for Gansey and the rest of the Raven Boys and just what would I do without them?? And smol Harry Potter, I need him in my life too. There's nothing I love more than falling in love with a figment of another person's imagination, apparently, but I AM OKAY WITH THAT.

YES AND FRIENDSHIPS!! I wouldn't know you without reading and that would just be so sad?! *cries* *but smiles* *because I read so we have been able to have the best comment chats*

I also love the immersion part! So maybe I have hardly ever left my state, but you know I have been all over the world in books.☺️

+ i am so happy that i was present to witness u falling in love w Gansey, how can anyone look into his adorable “dad friend” eyes and not love him?????? + i love sassy Harry Potter and watching him become slowly more “done w the drama” as he ages XD
(also i’m still recovering from when he gets a hug from Mrs. Weasley bc she is his mom now and harry was so grateful aND SMOL)

+ oh god this makes me emotional bc it’s true we woudl have never met without books????? and i love you + our friendship and THEREFORE I APPRECIATE READING EVEN MORE ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

I love this so much ♥♥ I’ve been a reader as long as I can remember and so sometimes I think I take for granted that not everyone loves reading as much as I do, but also I take for granted the things that make reading so amazing for me and such a constant source of joy and comfort in my life, and this list really made me sit back and look at those things and now I’m a little emotional in the best way 😭💕

AWW THIS IS SUCH A SWEET POST, MALANIE! ❤ I agree that this community is so wonderful, and I love being able to connect with characters so much – to the point where it's almost obsessive, but that's FINE! Wonderful post as always, beautiful!

Agree with your list! Reading has at times been the only thing that calmed my anxiety and other things so for me I consider it helps with my mental health as much as anything. Wonderful post!

Oh there are so many reasons I love reading; the five you’ve mentioned are key ones. I definitely feel like since I’ve started reading I’ve become a better writer, it’s like research right? Reading plenty of books and then practising your own writing. 😀
I love it when you feel that instant connection to characters too, and you mentioned some of my favourites in the post; Neil Josten and Gansey to name two.
I think the main reason I read is for the escapism aspects. It’s nice to be able to forget my problems for a few hours and escape into a new world completely. It’s why I read fantasy books so much! 😀
    Great post. 🙂 ❤

that is so true, reading is (supremely + incredibly fun) research & the best way to teach yourself style and character and PLOT and just general amazingness XD

Neil + Gansey have inspired so many of my own characters, just the way they see the world and their loyalty are so admirable????? i want all my characters to be somewhat like them, they’re just so damn lovable lskdjflksjd

+ escapism is one of my favorite things tooooo, I’m reading Truthwitch right now (my fantasy books journey has officially started) and it’s amazing how complex the world truly is??? THE POLITICS? i didn’t know i could be this invested in magical governments and yet here we are

Also important for writers. I don’t think I’d be a good writer if I didn’t read as much as I do. (OK, maybe not as much as I do because I read a lot but you know what I mean).
I get that, I don’t think I have any characters of my own inspired by either of those two but plenty of my characters have been inspired by my favourite book characters.
Oh I’m glad you’re enjoying it then, I don’t think I have Truthwitch on my TBR list but I may be convinced to pick it up if you love it! 😀

Hello Hello, currently reading Evelyn Hugo and AHHHHH all the shoutouts for it is making me so excited (and scared but it’s ok) 🙂 I love all the reasons that you’ve listed because I love reading for characters that become my babies. I also completely agree that we learn so much from it. I think I’ve absorbed part of my personality from books because I’m learning to be more empathetic or reading different character’s situations.

Also, we come to start a blog but we stay for the good friends and good books ❤ I love being able to shout with everyone about it!! It's also inspiring to see how beautiful people write, and it inspires me to become a more eloquent writer too! LOVELY POST 🙂

Social Anxiety Club raise your hands!!! I would love to make more friends while reading and blogging, but I don’ t know how to. Save me from myself…😂😂
And if a person has a bookshelf (with books that he/she actually read) he/she earned my respect. Hands down

Gansey and Damen are fine, but I’m the girl who loves Ronan and Laurent. And Cardan and Jude. And Mia Corvere. And other characters that have cheekbones sharp enough to cut people on, plus other assorted blades, weaponry, raptor birds, sarcasm and scathing wit that could gut people where they stand. You’ll often find me hanging out at Club Morally Grey.
