Usually I do Top Five Tuesday, but this week’s theme was “””books that need to be films”””
and I already did a post like that a few weeks ago.
because i’m somehow both psychic and self-destructive.
So this week I’m making a post for the Top Ten Tuesday meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. & i’m excited about this one!!! Books I wanted to read in 2018 but they slipped through my fingers like sand. but I’m not here to give up!
1. The Final Empire (Mistborn #1) by Brandon Sanderson
🌷 Adult Fantasy 🌷 Badass Female Characters 🌷 Compared to Six of Crows 🌷
I tried very hard with this one, but I couldn’t deal with the audiobook’s narrator. If the voice talent isn’t EXACTLY right in an audiobook, I instantly give up.
In this book, his voice just wasn’t soothing. so I said no way jose.
But I still want to read the physical book! I have a copy reserved at the library, & hopefully at some point this year I’ll be formally called upon as the Chosen One.
2. And Playing the Role of Herself by K.E Lane
🌷 Contemporary f/f romance 🌷
Lesbian fiction! about a girl who becomes friends with her co-star, and then *more*. This books sounds deeply romantic + everyone who reads it falls in love????
I only haven’t read it because it’s expensive to buy for myself && my library barely owns any sapphic books.
But I’m going to read this! Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
unless you’re cheap like me and refuse to buy books unless you’ve already read and loved them why does my spirit prevent me from taking financial risks
3. The House of the Scorpion (Matteo Alacran #1) by Nancy Farmer
🌷 Young Adult Sci-Fi 🌷 Distopian 🌷 has won awards 🌷
The sole thing I know about this book is that it’s “an inspiring tale of friendship!” But Marija recommended it to me and I love her recs with my entire soul, so I’m not at all worried about the possibility of me loving this.
4. The Princess Bride by William Goldman
🌷 classic 🌷 fantasy comedy 🌷
I love the movie mainly because it reminded me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail !!! The film grain & feelings & OVERALL COMEDIC GOLD was just like my 1970s King Arthur. I’m a big fan ALL AROUND.
But not many people seem to like the book????? They say it’s not as funny? So I want to read and find out for myself, like the motivated! person with original! opinions! I am in 2019.
5. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
🌷 young adult contemporary 🌷 gay 🌷 angsty 🌷
I’ve been putting this off because a large number of my Goodreads friends hated it. (i’ve been influenced skdjf WHAT SHOULD I DO???)
But I still want to read it because I constantly confuse myself.
6. Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
🌷 classic 🌷 best friends – lovers? 🌷 cute??? 🌷
The only Jane Austen novel I haven’t read yet, i will not be a failure for even one more year. Also, this is the golden child of some Austen fans. Mine is Persuasion but I’m willing to consider having a new favorite?
oh sh*t i’ve become a stone cold monster, arrest me before it’s too late
7. The Diviners (The Diviners #1) by Libba Bray
🌷 young adult historical fantasy 🌷 paranormal 🌷
I just like 1920s lingo it’s adorable and the bee’s knees
8. I Was Born for This by Alice Oseman
🌷 lgbtqia rep 🌷 feminist 🌷
I loved Radio Silence, but it didn’t reach the god tier level of friendship I was hoping for. maybe “I Was Born For This” will climb to that height.
9. A Girl Like Her (Ravenswood #1) by Talia Hibbert
🌷 own voices 🌷 autism rep 🌷 fat rep 🌷
Romantic and sweet + the main character is autistic. tbh I just want it to be Kiss Quotient.
but I’m glad I waited until 2019! because it’s what we’re reading in the Dragons & Tea Book Club in February !!! I’M PARTICIPATING IN THINGS, MA!
10. Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
🌷 young adult fantasy 🌷 sapphic! 🌷 horror 🌷 magic 🌷
Girls becoming obsessed with one another in the most wholesome way possible, Also a murder mystery. sign me up /immediately/
Out of all of these I’m most excited about Mansfield Park because it’s one I’m reading with my sister and we haven’t done an intentional buddy read since 2013. And it was Great Expectations by Charles Dickens????? IT’S BEEN 9457482 YEARS.
What is a book you didn’t get to in 2018? Have you read any books from my tbr? Which is your favorite?

Oh yeah, Mansfield Park was my favorite out of Austen’s books. XD I could really relate to Fanny Price, who is the heroine. I wrote a very long and detailed book review for Mansfield Park on Goodreads, if you’re interested in what I thought of it. Lol!

why on earth have I still not read it yet, especially bc it’s your favorite and i’m probably going to love Fanny!! and a copy is literally sitting on my desk skldf
i need to read your Goodreads review and then it will be the last inspiration I need c: c: c: c:
also I think because i haven’t read a Jane Austen-style book in so long, i don’t want to feel [gathers courage to say this horrible thing],,,,,,,,,,*bored* [immediately feels like a terrible human beinggggg]
I DON’T DESERVE JANE AUSTEN

I actually got I Was Born For This yesterday after *finally* looking it up and finding out that it’s all about soft internet friendships and rock band obsessions and awkward characters and I’m here for it, you know??
I’ve been putting off reading The Secret History and If We Were Villains for so long now, I NEED TO GET TO THEM ASAP.

There are so many books I tried to read in 2018 but didn’t get around to (I’d like to say I’ll be getting around to them ASAP this year but that’s a lie!) 😀
I haven’t read any of the books on your list except The Princess Bride and honestly it doesn’t have a lot in common with the film (it’s been a while since I read it though). I normally read the books before seeing the adaptation but with The Princess Bride I struggled to get into the book so had to watch the film first so I could understand what I was reading. If you do get around to it this year I’ll be interested in hearing what you think of it. 🙂
Also I have all of Alice Oseman’s books on my TBR list, and I know what I said earlier but they are a priority of mine for 2019, promise! 😀
Great post Malanie, and good luck getting through all these books in 2019. 🙂 ❤️

sdlkfj tysm Beth!!!! gosh i’m so terrified to read The Princess Bride, bc i love the film so much and now my standards are incredibly high??? but it might help if the book is v different than the movie bc now i won’t compare them so intensely and become Sadly Disappointed lsdkf
+oh god i cannot wait to see what u think of Alice Oseman, especially Radio Silence, i can see u adoring it so much???i’m v excited bc i know how much u like book friendships ❤ and Alice Oseman understands how //precious and beautiful// friendship can be
also i'm hoping that since you loved Darius The Great is Not Okay, you'll love Alice Oseman, bc they're so alike fundamentally

I don’t think you’ll be able to compare them, honestly the film is so different. I did enjoy the book it just took me a long time to get into it.
I need to get around to her books soon, I’ve been hearing so so so many amazing thing, and actually hearing you think I’ll love Alice Oseman because I loved Darius the Great is Not Okay just makes me want to start it even soon! 😀 ❤

I read half (?) of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and totally gave up on it. I can’t remember much about it except that the writing style just wasn’t for me.
I really need to read an Alice Oseman book already–I’ve been saying this since last year. 😂

I enjoy both the movie and the book of Princess Bride, they’re both good but in a different way! Like for example, I think the book can be too winding in monologue so the movies solve the issue as they jump straight to action. However, the movie lacks the connection I feel with the characters while reading. I feel like they balanced each other 🙂

The Princess Bride wasn’t a bad book, but I definitely do prefer the film version of it. Like others have told you, it had more humour in it.
This is my Top Ten Tuesday post.
