August Wrap Up (ft. 11 books!)

whoosh! what a month!

I had a beach vacation, fell madly in love with BB cream, and watched too many BookTube videos.

But it was an overall nice August and I’m so excited for chilly spooky weather!! I was so sunburned at the beach, I’M FINISHED with summer

life update:

this month I’ve been relaxing with a tiny break post-college (also a break from Twitter which can be such a negative, bad place to be sometimes. BREAKS FROM TWITTER ARE SO NECESSARY)  before I go out and seek employment. I’m so nervous to work *formally* to be honest. My only jobs have been homeschooling my sisters and blogging (which I count as a personal job because it’s rewarding work)

But I’m also very excited and hopeful!!!!!!!! As long as I can support myself while I write novels, plus support my book buying habits, things will be good. I’m just glad to be doing something other than school. I’ve been in school nonstop for FOUR years, and even though I loved it, I need long moment

SEPTEMBER GOALS:

↠↠get a job

↠↠finish at least 300 pages of my WIP

↠↠one blog post every week!

↠↠read (plus reply to) other bloggers’ posts everyday

What I Read.png

1. Beasts of the Frozen Sun by Jill Criswell

YA Fantasy | ARC | ★★★

I was given an ARC for this one for a blog tour, and I really enjoyed it!!!!!

I RARELY have good luck with ARCs,, so I’ve been avoiding them + the pressure of reviewing a book I (almost always) end up hating. TRULY A CURSE I CAN’T ESCAPE.

But this one ended up being nice! Especially the hate-love romance (the romance carried the weight of this whole book)

Beasts of the Frozen Sun (Frozen Sun Saga, #1)

2. The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfuss

Fantasy | Owned Book | ★★★★★

An amazing sequel :’) It was everything I could have hoped for and more.

I went into this so scared, because some fans who loved The Name of the Wind, hated this second book???????????  But thank god I thought TWMF was another work of pure genius (minus the romance. for the sake of this entire fandom can someone please escort Denna out of the building)

The Wise Man's Fear (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2)

3. the entire Magnus Chase series!!! by Rick Riordan

Middle Grade Fantasy | Owned Books | ★★★★

I LOVE MAGNUS WITH MY WHOLE HEART (even though the third book wasn’t that good. Rick Riodan didn’t take the Magnus x Alex ship where I hoped it would go.) EXCUSE ME MAGNUS AND I DESERVE A DEFINITIVE ANSWER FROM ALEX

Image result for magnus chase series

4. 1984 George Orwell

Classic Dystopian | Libby Audiobook |★★★

The only line I really loved was “the more corrupt you are the more I love you”

the rest was so boring I have no idea why I finished it

1984

5. The Best Thing by Mariana Zapata

Adult Contemporary Romance | Kindle Unlimited |★★★

The beginning and middle went so well!!!!! but the ending gave me whiplash. I needed to call an ambulance

The Best Thing

6. Hard to Resist by Christine L’Amour

Adult Contemporary Romance | Kindle Unlimited | ★★★

f/f romance!!!!!! I really enjoyed this, even though the plot had no stability.

A Very Serious girl and a “watch this i will run into the road for fun” girl experience the epic highs and lows of enemies-lover trope.

Hard to Resist

7. Fire In Her Eyes by Ruby Dixon

Adult Fantasy Romance | Kindle Unlimited | ★★★

A post-apocalyptic romance ft. a weredragon who imprints on a dudebro. This sweet adorable weredragon woman (look at her on the cover!!!!) deserves one million times !!!!!better!!!!!!

Fire In Her Eyes (Fireblood Dragons, #7)

8. Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman

YA Contemporary | Libby Audiobook | ★★★

I loved the discussion on mental disorder, especially on the frustrating nature of labels (diagnosis) and the sense of isolation felt by someone dealing with mental disorder. The paranoia was especially well-written.

But there was a pointless, unrealistic romance taking place in the residential mental health facility……………and it got on my nerves like no other.

You can tell it was tossed in for the sake of being a young adult novel, which pushed my buttons so hard.

Challenger Deep

9. A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams

Classic Drama | Owned Book | ★★★★★

Marlon Brandon’s character was so attractive at first, until he revealed his ugly soul.

A Streetcar Named Desire

10. The Miserable Mill by Lemony Snicket

Middle Grade | Owned Book | ★★★★

My childhood!!!!!!!! I picked this up from the library to relive my baby reader days. And I realized that this series the reason for my bleak outlook.

11. Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu

NA Graphic Novel | Library Book | ★★★★

SO DARN CUTE!!!!!

The only reason I took away a star was because of the giant leaps through time the plot goes through (we’re talking MONTHS)

But it was genuinely one of the most adorable, sunshiney things I’ve ever experienced as a person in her early 20’s. I was OVERPOWERED by pies and joy and innocence and love.

Check, Please! Book 1: # Hockey

How was your August?

What’s your zodiac sign? I only only *JUST* learned a few weeks ago that everyone actually has three main signs

(I was astounded.)

sun = Cancer, moon = Sagittarius, rising = Leo

You read SO MUCH. wow!! Lol same about booktube videos. I always watch them too!! who are your faves? mine are Chandler, Cindy and kat off the top of my head! But an underrated booktuber that I adore is Common Spence!

lmao, i’ve been trying to find out my moon and rising for so long, but my mom doesn’t know the exact time that I was born, and i think the site I’m using doesn’t work very well. i just know that my sun is an Aquarius, but i really wanna find out about the others!

Anyways, I hope you have a GREAT September!

i love Chandler (especially her KU recs) and Cindy so much!!!!!! oh gosh I should make a whole post on my favorite book tubers, it would a long, detailed post XD but some of my absolute most beloved are “boston reads books”, becca and the books, and meltotheany (omg I love her so much) ❤ ❤ And Common Spence is SO UNDERRATED BUT GOOD! I love the way he explains the synopsis, it's so comforting to me for some reason XD

also I know how you feel about not knowing the exact time you were born, i live with so many doubts in my life bc i might be using the wrong time. honestly i'm about to just claim a sign and refuse to be anything else no matter when i was born lol

      • Caitlin @ Caitlin Althea says:

yes, make the post ahhhh!! I’m super picky about the booktubers I watch because I know that if I subscribe to a lot, productivity will truly leave the chat, so I’m not yet subscribed to Boston and Becca, but maybe one day!!

I LOVE SPENCER. The editing and effort that go into his videos are so palpable!! He is also the BEST at giving synopses, and if there were an award for that, he would defo win it 😍

Lovely wrap up, Malanie!! BB CREAM IS A LIFE SAVER! I was introduced to this Korean bb cream years ago, and it is literally my favorite makeup product in existence. Good luck with the job hunting!! My only jobs before my current one a year ago, were homeschooling my younger siblings too. Lol. I’m so sad to see that Challenger Deep had an unnecessary romance in it! I was really looking forward to reading that one, but I can’t stand it when romance is adding for no reason other than to check off a box for making it a YA book.

Wishing you the best of Septembers, love! ❤

aaahh thank you so much Kelly!!!!!!!! i’ve always struggled with makeup because my skin is super sensitive and also I *cannot* make things even under any circumstances XD (it’s so bad) But BB Cream just takes away so much stress from my life and heart!!!!!!! honestly without it i’d just give up and wear sunglasses 24/7 lol

+ I’ve never met another person who has homeschooled their siblings, and this makes me SO EMOTIONAL because i thought I was completely alone in the universe ❤ ❤ ❤ it's so great to take credit for literally teaching them everything they know, i'm going to bring it up for the rest of their lives :')

Whaat, people hate A Wise Mans Fear?? It was so good!! I obviously cannot wait for the third book, but we all know that there is no actual date for that one so oh well. Hahaha, I’m in the same boat as you with summer! I went to the beach, had a great time, got burnt, and now I’m ready for sweater weather and hot cocoas and spookiness. Hope you have a great September!💕💕

Good luck finding a job, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you! 🥰 I also love the Magnus Chase books, but I really wish we had gotten more books in the Series though 😥 I don’t know much about Zodiac, but I checked and apparently my moon and sun sign are both Aries, which isn’t really fitting for me 😂 But still I’m intrigued!

aahh thank you Caro!!!!! I would’ve LOVED more Magnus books, and I feel like we needed more because book 3 was *rushed*. I needed more closure than what we were given, I nearly caused a scene. :””) and I love Aries so much!!!!! i feel kind of disconnected from one of my signs, too. i’m leo rising but I DO NOT ///under any circumstances// have fashion sense and style lkjdfdslfkj

I love Magnus Chase as well! He is such an amazing character. I completely agree that the last book in that series was lacking. I just wanted more resolution between Magnus and Alex, plus there were also a few other tiny things that bothered me. Still, Magnus is a wonderful character! 😀 Good luck with your September goals!

Aaahh it’s amazing that you managed to read 11 books in a month! I could only dream 😭😭 And it’s so funny that you say you liked the third Magnus Chase book the least, because I feel like it was the opposite for me! (BUT I kind of… don’t remember much about the first two books and somehow rated the first one 3 stars, so I’m clearly overdue for a reread lmao.) But good luck with getting a job, and also writing 300 pages of your WIP (that’s an AMAZING feat!). And thank you so much for featuring the awards post ❤✨

tysm for wishing me luck, omg I need all the luck I can get + actual help from a demigod. I WOULD FULLY ACCEPT MAGNUS CHASE’S HELP AND FRIENDSHIP ❤ he's so extremely adorable, & i'm always saying how much I love sunshiney book characters. the standard has been raised, because Magnus' dad was literally the god of sunshine, which makes magnus pretty much an actual ray of sunshine. my dreams came true, and I didn't see it coming :')

Ahh, 1984, how I loathe thee. I have to say, it is my least favorite book out of every book I have ever read?? It’s just, what was the POINT of it, with that ending…I’m not even lying, I threw the book across the room and glared at it because why, why did I invest so much time into it only for it to end like that. (I also had to read it for required reading, so that probably also made me hate it more.)

    • malanielovesfiction says:

ahhhh tysm!!!! ❤ ❤ 1984 is so so so bad, out of everything I've ever read through until the end, it was probably my least favorite tooo. It's so bleak and when he starts reading out loud a book within the book????? and the book he's reading is even more boring than 1984 itself??????? omg I was in shock, *dumbfounded*, I didn't think it was possible for things to somehow become even worse

Also, thank you for sharing my post!! It’s the one with the messy shelf so I’m slightly horrified and now I want to add the photo of the pretty shelf to the post as well 😂)
Annnnd, I am a Gemini, with a rising Gemini (I know, so Gemini…) but I don’t know about the sun and moon parts?! I will need to look into this more!!
Finally, you’re making me want to read the Kingkiller Chronicle now, but I also hate waiting for sequels!! 😭😂 xx

ahh thank you so much!!!!!! you saying means so much to me + gives me hope (which I need since there’s no hope for me to become an assistant coach for the Foxes in aftg, where I could be close to the drama. this job hunt is just me in mourning.)
+ I could live a long and fruitful life just looking at bookshelves, talking about bookshelves, watching bookshelf tours etc. I LOVE YOUR SHELF SO MUCH, it looked Truly Perfect, especially from someone like me who struggles to do more than make giant piles of books near my bed

AND GEMINIS MAKE ME SO HAPPY. I wholeheartedly believe that one of my favorite characters of all time, Tyrus from “The Diabolic” is a Gemini ❤ (have you read "The Diabolic"? if not omg Meegs I think you would love it so much, it rivals my love for Foxhole Court)

I’m also super happy to see that you loved the Magnus Chase books 😀 I only read one (I’m so late) but I loved it. And I also was super disappointed with 1984, I still don’t understand the “hype” around it.
Here are my zodiac signs (always love talking about astrology):

+ the question on my gravestone = why tf does 1984 have so many fans??!!

OH MY GOODNESS, you are the first libra I've ever met!!!!!! I relate to libra at a *fundamental* level because w decisions I'm always more curious about things/people, rather than just outright making passing judgement. And we both tend to have so much sympathy and undying love for villains!! ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
